Why Most People Fail at Starting an Online Business (And How to Actually Get Started)

Why Most People Fail at Starting an Online Business and How to Fix It

Starting an online business sounds simple on the surface. Pick a product, build a website, start selling. But once you actually sit down to do it, things get confusing fast.

There’s advice everywhere, tools you’ve never heard of, and a long list of things that all seem important. It’s easy to feel like you need to figure everything out before you can even begin.

If you’ve ever felt stuck before getting started, you’re not alone. Most people don’t fail because they can’t do it. They fail or struggle because they get overwhelmed, overthink it, or try to do too much at once.

Let’s break down why that happens, and what actually works instead.

Short on time? I’ve condensed most of these sections with bulletpoint lists to make it easier to skim.

Too Much Information (And No Clear Direction)

One of the biggest problems beginners run into is information overload. And honestly? I can’t blame anyone if they’re brand new to this scene. There’s TONS of information out there and it’s easy to be skeptical of who or what to trust. It’s an age of ‘everyone’s an expert’ when few are. I don’t like the term ‘guru’ or ‘expert’, but I have been doing this business for nearly 20 years now and trust me, I’ve seen a lot.

You search for how to start an online business, and suddenly you’re seeing:

  • affiliate marketing
  • dropshipping
  • digital products
  • coaching
  • print-on-demand

Every option sounds like “the best” way to start. Everywhere you turn, there’s a blog post about how their way is the best.

The problem isn’t a lack of opportunity, it’s actually a lack of clarity in a lot of cases.

When everything feels like a good option, it’s hard to choose one and move forward. That’s why many people end up stuck in the research phase instead of taking action and to be honest, I can see why and how that happens very easily.

Trying to Do Everything From Scratch

Another common mistake is thinking you need to build everything yourself. While it’s certainly an option, digital products have been readily available for years already. I started this business way back in the early 2000s, if that gives you an idea.

That means:

  • creating a product from zero
  • writing all your content
  • designing everything
  • figuring out branding from scratch

That’s a lot, especially for a beginner.

It’s not that this approach is wrong, but it’s often unnecessary. Trying to do everything yourself can slow you down to the point where you never actually launch anything because you’re too tied up into wondering where to start, how to start, which step to do next.

A faster and easier approach is to start with something that already exists and build on it.

Fear of Doing It Wrong

Even when people have an idea, they often hesitate.

Questions like:

  • “What if this doesn’t work?”
  • “What if I pick the wrong niche?”
  • “What if no one buys?”

…can stop progress before it even starts.

The truth is, most successful online businesses weren’t perfect from day one. I’d wager less than 5% were launched with few to no issues. They were built by taking action, learning as they went, and improving over time.

Waiting until everything feels “ready” usually means waiting forever, and that’s obviously not something you want to have to do.

No Clear Starting Point

A lot of advice makes things sound more complicated than they need to be. Pick up any blog or article written and they’ll give you ‘easy to follow’ sections with 5 steps each. Some people get overwhelmed after the first few steps, and that’s not uncommon.

Instead of a simple starting point, beginners are told to:

  • build funnels
  • automate everything
  • create multiple products
  • set up complex systems

That’s overwhelming and unnecessary in the beginning. What most people actually need is a simple, clear path forward with stepping stones as they go. Are all those listed items helpful? Yes. Do they all need to be done right now, or by launch? Absolutely not.

What Actually Works Instead

If you want to start an online business without getting stuck, the goal is to simplify the process as much as possible.

Instead of trying to do everything, focus on:

  • choosing one direction
  • starting with one product
  • getting something live
  • improving from there

That’s it. Sounds a little too simple, right? But it’s true. You know this because you’ve likely applied this thinking to other aspects of your life. Need to clean the house, and it’s overwhelming thinking about all the things you need to do. Organizing, sweeping, mopping, cleaning clutter. But you start in one spot with one task, then build from there. The same principle applies here.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to start with existing digital products that you can customize and build on.

A Simpler Way to Get Started

A straightforward way to begin could look like this:

  1. Choose a niche or topic
  2. Start with a ready-made digital product
  3. Customize it to fit your audience
  4. Launch and improve as you go

This approach removes a lot of the friction that stops people from starting in the first place.

For example, instead of writing an entire ebook from scratch, you could begin with PLR content and adjust it to match your voice, style, and audience.

You Don’t Need to Start From Zero

There’s a common belief that everything has to be created from scratch to be “legitimate.”

In reality, many online businesses are built by improving, combining, or repurposing existing ideas and content. After all, how many different ways can we talk about the same topics, really? You’re simply rehashing the same talking points in a slightly different way or in your own voice. Remove half the battle by grabbing pre-made content and just tailoring it to you and your business.

What matters most is how you use it.

When you take something and make it better, clearer, or more useful for your audience, you’re creating value regardless of where you started.

Want to Start Without Overcomplicating It?

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, the simplest way forward is to remove as many barriers as possible. Give yourself a clean, clear slate and ONE task.

Starting with ready-made digital products can help you:

  • skip the hardest part of creation
  • focus on learning how to sell
  • get something live faster

From there, you can build, expand, and refine your business over time. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed with ten different to-do lists and no idea where to go next, simplify everything. Parse things down into actionable ‘buckets’ and work from ‘necessary’ to ‘not needed right now’. Create a chart, routine, schedule, whatever you need to help keep things organized. Our Lifestyle Planners Pack is great for not just something like this, starting your own business, but even just life in general. Also makes for a very nice first product to sell. 😉

Final Thoughts

Most people don’t fail because they aren’t capable. To be frank, I’d argue almost everyone with access to the internet can make it. They fail because they make the process harder than it needs to be.

Starting small, using what’s available, and focusing on progress instead of perfection can make a huge difference.

You don’t need everything figured out, you just need a place to start.
